Lightify: Osram shuts down its ZigBee servers

Osram, the world's second largest manufacturer of lighting, has just announced the closure of its Lightify servers. While some sites specializing in destocking will carry out private sales of connected lighting in the coming days, the press release from the German company calls for caution. What will become of their products? How can we use them? The Alexians take stock.

Lightify: end clap on August 31, 2021

Le company press release leaves no doubt: Osram will permanently shut down its servers on August 31, 2021 after only 5 years of service. After this date, the brand will therefore not ensure no more updates or monitoring of its products and will leave users of the Lightify app orphaned.

Considering that the protocol it uses, the ZigBee Light Link, is now obsolete compared to the ZigBee 3.0, Osram specifies that its Lightify system is "Technologically surpassed by other solutions on the market". Arguing that today it cannot make the necessary investment to develop its products, the brand is therefore throwing in the towel and warning its users that they will no longer be able to fully use the products in the Lightify range, including servers. cloud will be closed altogether.

If it will always be possible to turn on or off its lights, to vary the light intensity or to change their colors, support for voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa will not be maintained and it will therefore no longer be possible to control them by voice. Worse yet, Osram will make it impossible to add devices to your Lightify app as she explains in this list of discontinued features.

How to continue to use Osram and Ledvance devices?

After our Osram bulb tests Smart+ Classic White E27 or even the Ledvance connected socket Smart+, you may have invested in this brand which is good value for money and we are sorry, but rest assured, here we are only talking about the ZigBee Lightify app and bridge. Indeed, if the Germanic company will stop maintaining its system and updating its equipment, we have always advised you to use them directly on the ZigBee hubs. Amazon Echo or the Philips Hue Bridge. A possibility which will remain!

It is therefore only the Osram Lightify system that is abandoned. The Alexians

Indeed, the use of Osram and Ledvance products Smart+ will always be possible with Philips Hue bridges, Echo Show 2, Echo Plus, or even Echo Studio. Reassuring news that will not change your habits in any way since the devices connected to them did not benefit from updates anyway. It is therefore only the Osram Lightify system that is abandoned. For the moment, in any case, because this announcement obviously raises many questions about the future of Osram and in particular of Ledvance, whose financial difficulties already seem significant while we are currently living through an unprecedented health and economic crisis ...

Fascinated by Alexa since the day I received it in beta test, I gradually became passionate about the subject, before deciding to go further by creating a site with Jean-Christophe. An activity that allows me to quench my thirst for new technologies and share my discoveries about the nicest of communities: Les Alexiens.
