Tutorial: add a device with the ZigBee Jeedom plugin

Jeedom Altas tutorial and ZigBee plug

You will see to acquire a nice ZigBee power strip, but it does not go back under Alexa or not completely. It's nerd (which comes, hold on tight, from the word nerd, an object in a bundle, which cannot do anything on its own ...), but rest assured, we are going to show you how to use the different holds of a voice strip with Jeedom ...

For this, we will use the integrated gateway of the Jeedom Atlas home automation box and a ZigBee Lidl power strip. Of course, this works more generally with other devices using this protocol. It's the way of doing things that is interesting. You will need the Jeedom plugins "ZigBee", " Alexa "And" Virtual "... And a little patience.

How to add a ZigBee device with the Jeedom plugin?

For the installation of plugins "ZigBee" and " Alexa »We refer you to our Jeedom Atlas test.

Official ZigBee plugin

First, you need to select the ZigBee plugin in the Jeedom Market. It is chargeable if you have not taken a pack, but costs only 6 euros.

Press "+ Install Stable". It will appear on your box a few minutes later.

In the game " Plugins management », Choose« ZigBee And configure it.

It is above all necessary toactivate (State part). Otherwise, well it doesn't work ... Then activate the dependencies. Required for the plugin to communicate with other "programs". Then it is necessary to configure it at “Controller 1” level. The values to enter depend on your Jeedom device. In the case of the Atlas, these are the ones you see on the capture. Don't forget to save!

To finish, press " restart the daemon ". Yeah! Jeedom feels heavy Metal baby! In fact, it means, " start the program », But said like that, it sucks for sure.
Et if all goes well , the "Demon" turns green.

Plugin Alexa by Jeedom

Now we will install the Plugin Alexa official developed by Jeedom SAS, which is free but requires a subscription to voice services, on your home automation box.

Activate it by going to " Plugins management ».

But if you stop there, it won't work. It is indeed necessary to take out a “voice assistants” subscription. It costs 12 € per year. The latter is necessary and no way to escape it.

When you have subscribed to the subscription, go to the Plugin Alexa (plugins, plugins management…) and, at the configuration level, make sure that your subscription appears. Click on " send ". This will send the information that your subscription is valid and communication with the outside can be done. It's finish.

Oh no, not really ... It is missing Skill! In the application Alexa (Smartphone or PC), find and activate the Jeedom Skill (identifiers of the Jeedom Market). Thanks to this, the link between Alexa, the voice assistants and Jeedom service will be effective.

Virtual plugin

come install the "Virtual" plugin and activate it as seen previously.

What will it be used for? Very good question, thank you for asking it. Virtual will come create "virtual copies" of your equipment in order to come, on your side, to modify them according to your desires. With a multiple socket, you will be able to come and create as many copies as there are takes, for example, and reduce each version to a single take, a single command. We will see that and you will understand why.

Modus Operandi

Installation of the power strip via "ZigBee"

Yes, you have to start by having your device recognized. Go to "Plugins"> "Home automation protocols"> "ZigBee".

Enter your device in pairing mode following the manufacturer's instructions and activate the "Inclusion mode" on Jeedom, then choose your device from the list. A green message will tell you that inclusion mode is active for 3 minutes.

In a few seconds, the power strip is recognized. For brands already listed, and without a manufacturer overlay, you will even have the name of the manufacturer and the reference of the equipment.

In general settings, rename your device if you wish, choose its catégorie, the room (parent object) where it is installed and above all select " Enable "And" Visible ". Activate means that the power strip will be controllable by Jeedom. Visible means that you will be able to see it in your Dashboard.

For the visible part, it's up to you because if you are doing virtual ones, you may not need to display the base element. Save !

To make sure it is working well and to see what it does, go to " My Orders ". You can see that in our case there are 3 command packs corresponding to each of the 3 sockets. Press on " Tests »On1, for example, or Off1 and listen if your power strip snaps into place. Yes ? Perfect. You can come and name each package whatever you want. This will be useful if you want to make your power strip visible as a whole or in part on your Dashboard. You will be able to control it by clicking on the different names ...

To be able to use it by voice in a simple and autonomous way by Alexa, the simplest remains come and create clones of your power strip to use them individually. Because in fact, in the current state, it is your power strip that would go up under Alexa and not its subunits.

Creation of copies with "Virtual"

You're starting to understand the usefulness of "Virtual" better, aren't you? To use it, it's simple.

In "Plugins", "programming", choose "Virtual" then go to "Add". Give a name to the equipment you are going to create (Computer for example).

Define the parent object (the room where it is), its category, activate it and make it visible. Save.

Basically you have the same controls as the original device. You can blow it up using the Θ in front of the controls. In our case, we only kept the commands relating to State 1, previously renamed "Computer". We have also changed the name On1 and Off1 in "on" and "off", because more class. And if you want your new virtual device to be displayed in a room, select “display”.

Do the same for the other takes. And here is what it gives in vision of the local Dashboard:

Use via Alexa

We must now trace the virtual devices to Alexa. Go to the plugin " Alexa "(Plugin, communication, Alexa) and find your clones in all your jumble.
You can see that in our case, we only highlighted two of the three sockets: Computer and Printer. So there is 3 devices that go back : Computer, Printer and the power strip as a whole.

Then you have to say to Alexa de recognize devices. Virtual or not, it doesn't make a difference to her. Either way, the app Alexa does not know them intimately because they are not on his "network".

To upload them to your application, check " transmettre », Write down the type of device to be reassembled (Plug) and name it. We called them “Desktop Printer” and “Desktop Computer”. It is this new surname that will go back in Alexa. Save! a OK will see that everything is… OK. But sometimes it can only appear after the next step, which is here.

In the application Alexa, do a device search in the game "Devices" then with the "+" top right . As we are on takes select "plug" and let it be. It works like a completely standard installation.

And there, surprise, your different devices appear. And you see that they are attached to Jeedom.

And there you have it, you can now use each of the constituent sockets of your multi-socket by voice. " Alexa, turn on desktop computer "," Alexa, turn off Desktop printer ”. Easy no? Of course when we help you, of course ...

Did i choose Alexa or did she choose me? Let's say that as a beta tester, it's a bit of both! And I do not regret having met our favorite assistant nor this adventure undertaken with Alexien Modo. Technophile, self-taught and loving popularization, I try to make our common passion easy to access!
