Following our Aqara Hub M2 test, you will not be surprised to learn that we wanted to associate a number of new devices with our new gateway. And it is with the plug connected in European format of the brand that we will continue our exploration of the ecosystem Aqara Home. Powered by the ZigBee 3.0 protocol, however, it will not only interest owners of a Xiaomi / Aqara gateway ... Indeed, the new Aqara Smart Plug is also directly compatible with speakers Amazon Echo equipped with a hub, but also with most home automation boxes such as Jeedom or Home Assistant.

Announced almost a year ago, it took a few months before it appeared on the French market, but know that it is now available at Domadoo, the French specialist in home automation, where you can find it. procure at 29.99 € excluding promotion.

Aqara Smart Plug: the ZigBee as we like it

The connected socket Aqara Smart Plug does not derogate from the (new) standards of the brand. Presented in a compact packaging in white and blue colors, it benefits from a neat presentation.

At Aqara, the impression of quality is always there, so it's no surprise.

In addition to its ZigBee protocol, here in version 3.0, the side faces teach us that it is obviously possible to remote control, which is compatible with major voice assistants market, but also that it offers protection against overvoltage and monitoring of electricity consumption. Very good arguments, not so common ...

Since we are talking about current, know that the Smart Plug Aqara is in European format. Also called E / F or Schuko, it is perfectly compatible with French installations and ensures trouble-free earthing. It is always good to remember it, as the fears on this subject are still so stubborn ...

Regarding the design, we must admit that we expected a more compact model. However, the ZigBee socket Aqara Smart EU plug is less bulky than Osram Smart+ or that ugly SilverCrest socket by Lidl. Rounded in shape, it presents a on / off button on top and a LED indicator very discreet which will not illuminate our rooms at night.

In short, the overall feeling is excellent, but we expected no less from the brand ...

Aqara Smart Plug: installation and use

If install this plug on a brand hub and the home application Aqara Home seems to go without saying, you should know that this ZigBee 3.0 connected plug will also work directly with Pregnant Amazon Echo equipped with a “connected home” hub, but also with home automation boxes (Home Assistant, Jeedom, Domoticz, Homey, etc.).

Aqara Home

This is his favorite ground, so we will install the Aqara plug Smart EU plug on Aqara Hub M2.

To do this, nothing simpler :

  1. Launch Aqara Home
  2. Press the "+" top right,
  3. Choose « Smart Plug (EU Standard) "
  4. Press the power button for 5 seconds,
It's good, your connected plug is correctly installed!

We then find the socket and its functionalities:

  • A virtual on / off button
  • Countdown timer : to program timers
  • The settings : name, location, scenes and automations with other devices in the application ...
  • Energy consumption : daily and weekly report. To see more detail, just zoom in on the graph with two fingers.

There are some pretty interesting options:

  • maximum power : you can set the maximum power used by the device connected to it from 100W to 2300W. This is the first time that we have encountered this feature and we must admit that it is rather interesting!
  • Default state : you can set a default state, a practical option in the event of a power failure. By using "last state", the socket will return to its previous state, which will prevent a device from turning on again after a night cut for example.
  • Accessory replacement : this feature allows data to be migrated from one device to another ... This can be useful if you want to exchange sockets from one room to another or duplicate their settings, but also if it fails.
  • ZigBee signal quality : practical to create a good mesh of your network. Note that the socket Aqara Smart EU plug can act as ZigBee router, it is not an "end device".

Xiaomi Home

The catch Aqara Smart EU plug is also compatible with older Xiaomi / Aqara gateways. You can therefore install it on Xiaomi Home. To do this, we invite you to follow the procedure described in our Xiaomi Mi plug test Smart Plug. It is in all respects the same.

Xiaomi Mi review Smart Plug

Amazon Alexa

Several options are available to you. You can indeed activate the skills of the two applications above or, it is just as practical, use the ZigBee bridges of your speakers Amazon Echo.

As a reminder, the speakers Amazon Echo with ZigBee hub are as follows:

If you have one of these models, all you need to do is:

  1. Plug in the connected plug,
  2. Ask your assistant « Alexa, detects new devices ”,
  3. Push the button power until it flashes,
  4. The LED flashes quickly 3 times,
  5. It is done ! The outlet is operational in a few seconds ...

You will then find your Aqara EU connected plug in "Devices> Sockets" and can, of course, use it in your routines Alexa.

This solution has a major advantage: the local operation. Indeed, Alexa will be able to control it even if your internet connection is down. The only downside is that you will not be able to benefit from monitoring power consumption. Well, for now anyway, because Amazon started to deploy its "Energy dashboard" in the USA. The functionality should therefore soon arrive in France. That said, let's be honest, it's been a long time since we looked at these reports which, in the end, do not add much in our opinion ...

Google Home

Still uncomfortable with home automation, Google Assistant will need help. Understand that, no, you will not be able to use the Aqara plug directly as with Alexa and that'it will have to go through a ZigBee gateway. To do this, we recommend that you purchase an Aqara M1S or Hub M2 gateway. This is the best solution, and even though Google Home only manages a few devices, the outlets do just fine.

  1. Open the Aqara Home app,
  2. In "+" at the top right, select
  3. Push the button power until it flashes,
  4. The LED flashes quickly 3 times,
  5. 'is made ! There too It's quick and easy...

Home automation box

Do you have a home automation box that supports ZigBee 3.0? No problem, it is perfectly compatible. We integrated it in a few minutes under Home Assistant with deCONZ via a RaspBee II gateway (see test). You can, of course, do the same with a Conbee II or a Zigate, but also many other models.

Also note, this plug is also natively compatible with the Homey home automation box.

Our opinion on taking Aqara Smart Plug

Both sober and responsive, the Aqara connected socket Smart EU plug is a great product. Whether with Alexa and a bridge Amazon Echo, or with Google Home via an Aqara hub, it indeed offers a reduced latency and turns out pleasant to use daily. Her robust design suggests excellent durability and its surge protection is a real plus. We particularly appreciated the possibility of being able to limit the power delivered like that of being able to choose a default state. Likewise, consumption monitoring is an option that will be of interest to many users. At € 29.99 per unit at Domadoo, it is not cheap, but the additional cost compared to a Tuya Wi-Fi socket seems to us to be fully justified and we can only advise you to opt for ZigBee 3.0, a protocol brought to develop, if not to generalize.
Fascinated by Alexa since the day I received it in beta test, I gradually became passionate about the subject, before deciding to go further by creating a site with Jean-Christophe. An activity that allows me to quench my thirst for new technologies and share my discoveries about the nicest of communities: Les Alexiens.
