NodOn test: battery-free and wireless switch compatible with Philips Hue

Any self-respecting Alexien likes to control his connected objects first and foremost by voice thanks to his favorite voice assistant Alexa, logical after all, we are The Alexians, aren't we? But it can happen, sometimes, that we could not or did not wish to invoke it to turn off or turn on our household devices. It is in this context that we have sought the means to act silently without having to go to the object and activate it. We thus found and chose to test a switch compatible with appliances Philips Hue and labeled Friends of Hue responding to our wishes, who more wireless  (finished the nightmare of: I have or not the neutral installed?) and without battery (yes yes, it is also possible to operate without a power supply). But how is this possible then? Well, thanks to thekinetic energy.

But what is it, then ? The definition of Larousse teaches us that it is a theory explaining a set of phenomena from the sole movements of material particles. But still ? The product sheet tells us more simply that the switch works thanks to the mechanical energy produced when one of the buttons is pressed. Much simpler as an explanation.

This switch presented by NodOn for the range Friends of Hue uses kinetic energy making it fully autonomous and mobile, like a remote control.

NodOn for Philips Hue: presentation of the switch

Received in a translucent plastic bag, there is no loss of time to open it to discover it and to detail the presentation of the packaging. So let's get straight to the point: the switch itself. It is of form square. slightly bomb with its 1.5 cm thick total and poster 8 8 cm x cm side (the equivalent of a classic switch attached to the wall) with of rounded corners in order to soften it even more its aestheticism.

Designed in a high-quality plastic in white color, its perimeter is smooth while the two buttons are slightly grainy for a better touch. On the back its mounting bracket is chestnut color. It is accompanied by a small leaflet, which could not be more simplistic, which just informs us that we must download the Philips Hue app who supports it and how we can fix it (if desired) either with screws (not provided) either with the two adhesive strips double-sided predisposed on the support.

NodOn: more mobility

Switch installation

NodOn, as we said earlier is a Friends of Hue brand and just like the Dimmer Switch Hue that we presented to you with the starter kit, it will interact with the bulbs but not only… shhh!

Before starting to use the switch consisting of two physical buttons gathered on a single box, it must be recognized by the Hue bridge that we already have.

In the application (installed from the Google store or on IOS), we click on Parameters at the bottom right of the screen, then on Accessory configuration, the white tab: add an accessory. The following page opens and lists a whole series of objects that can be paired. Just scroll down the page to: NodOn Smart Switch for Hue in order to select our equipment.

A tip before you start, locate the left and right buttons because nothing differentiates them and in use if one does not fix it to the wall and wish to keep it mobile, it will be more than likely that one will press on the wrong one. Personally, the mark taken is the direction of the label on the back, but nothing prevents to make a light line on one of the sides. That being said, let's get back to pairing. Justpress the right button for ten seconds like asking and releasing. No LED indicating that the pairing is done. It is necessary to count the ten seconds and if it is correct, the device is displayed in a new page and it will be necessary as indicated simultaneously press the two buttons in opposition to finish the recognition.

A tip before you start, locate the left and right buttons because nothing differentiates them.

Each left and right button must be assigned a zone already listed in the application

It is then appropriate to configure the four push buttons (two on each button) represented by our switch. This is done by choosing and validating at the top right on the tick one (or more) room (s) or light (s) where it will act as a switch or dimmer depending on the configuration chosen, without the need for a same programmed action that all devices are on the same floor. The main thing being that they are objects compatible with the Philips Hue universe and a 20 meter radius .

The number of parts that can be assigned to a pusher is limited to three contre two people for the Philips Hue dimmer switch. However, the number of lights is not limited and it is even possible to choose "All the lights". Practical in the evening if you are the last to go to bed, no need to go around the house! A good configuration and a simple press on the dedicated button and all the lamps will go out. Note, on the other hand, that on the same push-button you will have to choose either the parts or the lights.

But it is not only turning on or off that can be configured on each button. Indeed, the switch also acts as a dimmer and it is possible to choose an atmosphere for each of the rooms and / or lights among all the proposals offered by the list. Finally, a long press on the push-button allows you to perform another setting. The combinations are vast and varied.

The icing on the cake and good surprise, our switch is also able to act on our Ledvance connected socket (this is obviously also possible with the Osram connected plug Smart+) which we also tested because it is part of the Friends of Hue sphere. It will thus be possible, thanks to the NodOn switch, to turn it on or off silently and remotely.

In conclusion, the NodOn switch for Philips Hue available at a price of 34.9 € is a little marvel that conceals an incredible number of configuration possibilities. It is really impressive. Its look is nice, no need to hide it. The utility is there in the same way as the Philips Hue dimmer can be and it is still complete by offering more configuration possibilities, and even if it does not go back in Alexa, it is not its vocation and it is a very appreciable complement.
