HUGOAI Lamp test: connect your bedside

If you are an avid reader, you know that Alexians like light. We have also tested various ways to illuminate our interiors with smart bulbs. Whether in main lighting with for example  the Philips Hue starter kit or in more targeted lighting to carry out meticulous work as permitted by the BENEXMART smart desk lamp even in auxiliary lighting with the ZEMI night lightSMART, each of these different items of equipment is expected to provide the light corresponding to its use. This time, we looked for a simple mood lamp for our interior, but which brings us a warm and soft light source while being of course compatible with Alexa sine qua non for our purchase. This is how the connected bedside lamp, model HG02 of the brand HUGOAI, available on Amazon at the price of 46.99 € in white without promotion 54.99 € in gray), caught our attention. This works on the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network with the application Smart Life no additional hub will be necessary for its use. Let's see if it meets our expectations.

HUGOAI: an attractive connected LED bedside lamp

Unboxing and presentation

Simplistic or even minimalist these are the watchwords when it comes to its packaging when it is taken out of the shipping box, even if it is true that this is not the most important. No frills, no color, just cardboard with the design of the lamp topped with the brand. The sides do not offer more decorum. On one side, we have the technical characteristics mentioning among other things the EU version power supply as well as the 16 millions of colors that it is possible to obtain. On the other side of the box, a sticker indicates the energy class. On the latter, the LED is classified A, A + and A ++ ... your choice! The energetic class corresponds to the classic interval of LEDs, the information is not clear at all and nothing in the manual allows to specify to which class it relates ...

Once opened, we find the lamp well wrapped in two plastic bags and confined between two blocks of foam to hold it. The lamp is supplied with its power cord of a comfortable length of 1.50m  and its adapter plug we find them in the box accompanied by a User Manual in six languages including very detailed French.

Designed in different plastics, that of the illuminating tube measuring 14 cm high for 11 cm wide is made in a translucent material to allow the diffusion of light. The one making up the top - where there are buttons for the different functions - and the base - of a height of 5.50 cm - are both in a smooth, white plastic for our model.

On the front is printed in mouse gray (another color also available for the base and the cap) HUGOAI in a dark way. Our connected LED lamp is just as uncluttered as it is nice to look at. Weighing 599 g all the same, we appreciate the ease of grip which allows to have a stable maintenance. It is on this one that the control panel of our lamp. Composed of a central button acting as ON / OFF and two circles : one is rotary and will act on the choice of color, the other is fixed and has three buttons.

These three buttons will allow you to choose:

  • Color temperature, a successive press makes it possible to obtain: 2000 K => 3000k => 4000 K,
  • RGB to activate the color function
  • Timer to turn off our lamp after 30 minutes

Note that the button RGB activates the color function but does not allow it to be exited. To return to white lighting, simply press the color temperature button will switch.

On the back we find the power port. Below the pilot, two rubber bands ensure stability when placed on the table. Note that our lamp complies with European standards RoHS (limiting the number of dangerous substances to 6).

Now that we have made the tour of our lamp, let's find its various technical characteristics

HUGOAI: a bedside lamp Smart Life

Pilot installation and use

If you are a convinced Alexien, you probably already have the application Smart Life required for the operation of our lamp. Otherwise, we invite you to follow our tutorial how to tame Smart Life. Once the application is installed, the account created, the smartphone well set on 2.4Ghz there is nothing simpler, we will register our lamp on the app.

Before that, we also have to switch on the pilot light. Once the cord is in place and the assembly is connected to the mains, pressing the central button at the top turns on the lamp. And there, at this stage, we can already appreciate the luminous rendering. Unable to resist any longer, we do a brief test of the different colors which we will detail a little further on. These are shimmering. The flow is soft, logical for a night light, but provides a comfortable light. Good thing, that's what we were looking for.

Let's resume our installation. We have to put the lamp in pairing mode. This can be seen by the flashing green display in the gap between the two circles on the control panel. If when powering on the pairing mode did not automatically activate, don't panic, it is possible to force it by pressing the timer button for more than 5 seconds until the green light flashes ..

Let's go back to the app Smart Life. To launch the pairing procedure between the application and the night light, you must click from the home page on the "+" at the top right, then on the next page select on the left the catégorie " lighting " and in the right part we have chosen "Light strip". Not sure that another is not suitable, but the titles under the logos of the lamps are not visible in full, it is not easy to choose for sure the one corresponding to the required function. Indeed, you should not choose a symbol corresponding to other protocols such as "Bluetooth" or "Zigbee". The one shown above works perfectly.

Indeed, you must not choose a symbol corresponding to other protocols such as "Bluetooth" or "Zigbee" and available in the application.

The next page asks if our lamp is flashing, indicating that it is a priest for the procedure. Once we have made sure of this, all that remains is to launch the procedure by indicating our password corresponding to our 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network because our night light, as a reminder, only works on this network. The connection search is displayed and once the pairing has been completed our " table lamp " appears in the list of devices supported by the application.

By clicking on our new connected object, we have access to all its settings.

On this first configuration page, we can thus change name by clicking on the pencil at the top right and give it a more common name than the one under which it appears.

At the bottom of the page, we find three buttons, with the ON / OFF in the center if you want to intervene on the lamp from the application. But it must be said that as Alexien, what will interest us above all will be to control our lamp thanks to our favorite voice assistance. But, before we get there, let's pursue the possibilities offered by Smart Life.

On the left is the timer function which will activate or deactivate the lamp according to the state in which it is.

On the right, the Schedule button allows various and varied programs as well as the possibility of receive notifications its smartphone.

Once the ON / OFF button activated, under the name of the lamp we have three tabs: White et Colour - which allow you to choose the colors, temperatures and intensity - and Scene.

In this last tab, it is no less than eight scenarios which are available and pre-set: night, read, working, leisure, soft, colorful or even dazzling. Each scene can be edited by clicking on the map. Press down, in the scene area, to choose a color. Below, it is possible to determine the display mode of the light: static, flash ou breath (we don't see too many differences between the last two modes though).

After this brief overview, we let you discover more about all the possibilities offered by the application.

In use, the colorful rendering is very pleasant whether in whites or colors. The light intensity is perfect for a bedside lamp : gentle to watch television or more press to read without straining the sight. But it's not just in a room where she is able to help! Indeed, it is also ideal in decorative light to illuminate an area that you want to highlight, in a large room for example.

And with Alexa ?

And yes, what about with Alexa ? Because the main thing for us is to be able to control our night light by voice or to be able to do routines. Well, we are reassured! Our lamp goes back up without any problem in the application Alexa. We find it with the different settings available such as the intensity or to define the colors. These are certainly not 16 million in number, but quite sufficient to be able to have a large panel.

We can also include our night light in a routine. And thanks to Alexa, we can even bypass the limit of timer 30 minutes preset on the lamp by choosing, for example, a duration of 55 minutes before it goes out.

Finally, if we make a scenario in the app Smart Life with specific choices, these will go up in the application Alexa and a routine can perform it at will.

In conclusion, here is a lamp that offers many services. In addition to being visually nice, even if it can seem a little massive, it finds its place without difficulty whether in a living room or a bedroom. It can also, by being connected to a presence sensor, illuminate a corridor at night on a small area despite everything. The duration of the timer fixed on the lamp at 30 min without it being possible to modify it becomes anecdotal thanks to the routines in Alexa. The negative point remains the price around 50 €. Maybe a bit expensive for a bedside lamp?
