Wanfei Flower Care test: a connected object that takes care of your plants

Giving a flower or a plant is always a gesture imbued with emotion, for the person who offers it because he puts a little of himself in it, and for the one who receives it because it is the gesture of attention. that we testify to him. The plant will thus be an integral part of your life for a long time ... Finally, if you are familiar with the maintenance of it to provide the appropriate care. Besides the advice sheets that can be found in magazines or on sites, nothing beats being able to directly question the plant to know its needs in real time. And this is the Wanfei Flower Care soil tester which will allow us to dialogue with her by being her interpreter. You will see, the dialogue in Bluetooth is interesting. Follow the guide.

Wanfei Flower Care: a sensor with multiple functions

The Wanfei Flower Care soil tester. The cutout in its upper part reveals the handle. The annotations are in Chinese, but the graphic symbols suggest the different functionalities of the small sensor: brightness, humidity, temperature and nutrients. On the back, technical information and on the sides, the small Bluetooth icon. And that's all. This small object is connected, but not compatible with our voice assistants ... We can also imagine a “reminder” routine to check nutritional needs every 2 or 3 days.

Delivered in a thick transparent plastic box, the sensor is housed in a molded shell and is well protected from the vagaries of transport. It comes with an installation and user manual in 5 languages including French and very well done.

With a total length of 13.2cm x 2.5cm x 1.3cm thick  and weighing only 18 grams, it is composed of two distinct parts. The black part is buried and provides data regarding humidity and fertilization, while the green part contains the light and temperature sensors.

On the back only a small badge engraved on the handle breaks the smooth part.

The buried part:

Labeled IPX5, which is logical given its function, the black part detects the moisture level in the soil. 2 mm thick, it contains four sensors electro-conductivity type steel EC5 (professional standard) which will analyze the composition of the soil and alert you if necessary on the application.

The aerial part:

In green polycarbonate, two sensors are also integrated. On the flat part, the temperature detector and on the end that for the brightness.

As we can see above, the handle is in two parts. It is necessary to proceed with delicacy to open the case in order to remove the protection of the CR2032 battery that powers the device. In fact, this part must not be submerged or be subjected to shock, otherwise the sensors will be damaged.

The tour is quickly done, let's see the technical sheet.

WANFEI sensors for Flower Care

Installation and use

Flower Care app logo

The app that supports the device is named Flower Care. It is available under Android or iOS. It is a vast plant library which lists no less than 3000 plants from which the card must be extracted so that the different sensors can compare their results with what is recommended as treatment. But, before we get to that, let's install the app.

The battery protection has been removed, the Bluetooth of the smartphone activated and the application downloaded, we can start.

The first thing that is asked is to indicate the world zone in which we are. Note that it is recommended to use the Wanfei Flower Care on the China Mainland server. Despite everything, we wanted to test with the EU mode and carried out this test with it. An email address and a password must be entered. A verification code is sent to this email. Warning, we wanted to indicate an AOL address - yes, it still exists (editor's note) - this has never been recognized without other indication. After several unsuccessful attempts, we indicated a Gmail address and received in the following seconds the verification code which must be entered in the application.

When you get to the home page, click on the "+" At the top right and grant the GPS access to the location, then click on the model in the Bluetooth section. Placed at 10 cm from smartphone, detection is immediate.

We wanted to indicate an AOL address, it was never recognized

Once the sensor has been recognized, you must now tell it which plant it is. And there, if you are not versed in horticulture, it is not won. You certainly have a "top 20", but it is a safe bet that it is not with a plant from this list that you want to use the sensor Wanfei Flower Care. We will therefore have to go dig into the base.

We chose to research two different plants. You can search by the common name like Tamaya or Orchid. In the first case, you will not get a response. Indeed, you must enter the Latin name of the plant, either Begonia and there you can choose according to the foliage the one that corresponds either Begonia maculata more exactly for our Tamaya. On the other hand, by typing "orchid", you obtain a long list where we find the Phalaenopsis, and it is also the latter that the Wanfei Flower Care sensor will use.

Once the plant is found, you realize that it is better to be an English speaker. Indeed, all the sheets are in English! While some terms are fine, others may require a translator. The validated file, the sensor and a photo of the associated plant are displayed on the home page.

The Wanfei Flower Care can now be installed in the flower pot by pushing it down 2/3 as shown, carefully so as not to damage the roots. The first data arrives instantly. And there is red! Lighting and nutrition are not adequate while humidity and temperature are above threshold. We already know what needs to be fixed.

The sensors are pre-set for each plant. By clicking on the three dots top right, we arrive on the page " menu ».

  • Adjust the plant: by clicking on it you obtain the detailed sheet of this one,
  • Settings : if you want to make a change in target values, this is where it can be done, but you better be sure not to take any risks.
  • Change plant: you can add another plant to watch. Thus with a single sensor we can monitor several pots, but it is better to avoid this in order not to damage the roots by removing and replacing the sensor. The sensor is displayed on the new plant. To switch from one to the other, click on the name and validate. The device appears on a green background on the selected plant.
  • Hardware settings: indication of remaining battery charge and firmware version. In this section it is also possible to:
      • search for the device (which will blink three times in white but in a rather weak way let's say it)
      • remove the device from the account
  • Growth Report: this is where you will see detailed graphs and an account of each of the four headings. By clicking on the top right, on the calendar, you can get the data: daily, weekly or monthly.
  • Plant Journal: it's kind of his diary, where you can narrate and put pictures of his growth monitoring.

All Wanfei Flower Care data is synthesized on the plant page and correspond to time T. If you water the humidity or fertility rate will go up, but once the water has run out, it will go down. For lighting, the position of the sensor will be very important. When the sensor is hidden by a leaf, or depending on the time of day, the index may vary.

For example, if the plant is placed against a window and the sensor placed against the bottom of the glass, it will give a reading less than a few centimeters higher, but this does not mean that your plant does not receive all the light. brightness it needs.

Returning to the home page, in the central menu at the bottom of the page, Plants, you access the library where you can search for information on a plant, either by name as indicated above, or by clicking on the small green symbol at the top right and checking one or more pre-established filters.

In the menu " me ", we access app settings like language, the unit of temperature or light. An FAQ is also available, always in English.

In conclusion, the soil tester Wanfei Flower Care provides many services for the maintenance of delicate plants. It provides precise readings, even if it is necessary to read them taking into account the environment and the orientation where the plant and its sensor are placed, it goes without saying that this will greatly influence the results. It makes it possible to rely on the needs of the plant, in particular in fertilizer which is surely the most difficult element to know, and to provide it with a regular supply without waiting to see it wither. This is particularly useful for those who are discovering a variety of which they are not very familiar. This connected sensor for plants is therefore a precious help, even if we could have wished it to do more like sending notifications if one of the four parameters falls below a threshold. Nevertheless, we are reassured for our beautiful orchid that this soil tester should help us keep as long as possible.

Offered at € 25.99 on Amazon, Wanfei Flower Care is a useful and easy to use assistant to take care of your favorite plants. Un connected flowerpot offering exactly the same features, but rechargeable via USB, is also available at € 29.99.
