Connected shutters: 5 points to take into account

Let's take a look at one of the connected devices that makes mouth watering for anyone with roller shutters or electric awnings: a switch for connected shutters ! But unlike light bulbs or sockets, we will have to get our hands dirty. Care should not only be taken in choosing them but also in installing them. If you don't feel comfortable with electricity, ask a professional ... or your spouse if you have good life insurance. Not being able to install it for you, we present the 5 things to consider with your purchase.

1 - Radiofrequency or standard switch shutters? How many threads?

First question to ask and not the least: do you use a remote control with your current shutter? If this is the case, be aware that you will not be able to go through the connected switch box. You will have to go on a "Universal multi-source remote control" such as Broadlink RM Pro + which manages both RF, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as SwitchBot Hub Mini. In the end, in this type of case, you will not have to change the switches in place, just install a universal remote control and it's settled.

If you don't have a shutter with remote control, it smells good ... on the condition of having 3 sons (or 4 with the earth wire).

You have to make sure that you have:

  • Shutter :
    • Neutral
    • Phase return 1
    • Phase return 2
    • Possible earth wire
  • Network:
    • Phase
    • Neutral
    • Possible earth wire

If you only have one phase feedback coming from the shutter, that will not be possible.

2 - Look at the type of contact and the back of the switch

There are two types of contacts on tactile switches (almost all switches on the market):

  • by springs, the most common because they are less expensive but they can have two drawbacks:
    • If they are too long, the contact will be more or less random and your shutters will remain open or closed in the event of permanent contact. From where piloting difficulties or shutters which open and close alone, but without paranormal intervention.
    • Over time, they can relax and the aforementioned problems are found.
  • by capacitive blocks, the springs are replaced by capacitive blocks which will function as "Switches" as soon as they are hit. With this type of system, there is no problem with the inadvertent opening and closing of the shutters, but:
    • Be careful to put the front cover correctly because if it is a little offset, contact will be made permanently.
    • Like any electronic system, we don't really know what happens as we age.

Also look at the back of the switch, It is important that the electrical wire demarcation is clear enough and that the studs are well sealed so that your copper wires do not come to touch their little buddies or the printed circuit. We have had a case too deep and unobstructed pads leading to the fact that the switch burned out (because the wires touched each other or touched the circuit).

If you can also favor remote pads for the phase and neutral of the circuit, it is better, even if there should not be a problem if the terminal is well done.

3 - Look at the power of your engine

You never look at this, or almost never, but you have to be careful that the switch can handle the power of the motor of your shutter. The bigger the shutters, the more powerful the motors. It is therefore necessary to choose a switch that will not flinch and allow the loading of the motor and use to be supported.

Most switches are advertised for a wattage or load capacity between 500 and 600W. But some, the cheapest, are barely 300W. This can go for small shutters but be careful for those with large windows. This is usually prorated to the price, but not always.

You may be tempted by small modules standing behind your switches, but be aware that their power is often relatively low.

4 - The type of internet connectivity

As with all connected objects, you will find two types of connectivity:

  • Shutters connected by Wi-Fi: how to choose them? Wi-Fi: almost all connected switches for roller shutters operate over Wi-Fi, only 2,4 GHz. So be careful during the installation to connect to this frequency if your box is both 2,4 and 5 GHz. They are usually paired by pressing one of the buttons on the switch for 10 to 20 seconds depending on the brands. But just like light bulbs and outlets, the Wi-Fi network can quickly become saturated. You may therefore be led to invest in Wi-Fi Mesh or Wi-Fi mesh network to try to regain available speed.

  • Connect your ZigBee roller shuttersThe ZigBee protocol : for that you need a dedicated hub which will connect to the network and will itself take care of the connection of ZigBee devices. On the other hand, there are very few switch references for ZigBee roller shutters and they are often very expensive (Legrand for example). There are also micromodules, But we bet that this will become more democratic, such as plugs and connected bulbs.

5 - The application to control it

As with all connected objects, we invite you to make maximum use of a versatile piloting application with a skill Alexa or existing Google action in France. The vast majority of these switches work with Smart Life and are therefore compatible with the two main voice assistants on the market. They will be installed more or less like connected light bulbs. But the big advantage is that you can create scenarios like doing for example close the shutters with the sunset, conversely in the morning, make a group to open or close all the shutters at once. Some brands have their own app, but can be replaced by Smart Life. For some models, it will be possible to turn off the LEDs of the switch as on the Konyks Vollo Max.

For the few ZigBee switches that exist, you will have to go through the manufacturer's application. But in any case, to use it with Alexa or Google Home, see if the skill or action exists in France.

You now have all the keys in hand for choose your connected switch to make your roller shutter or awning docile. We refer you to our different tests to help you in your choice but be careful, this type of connection must be made with care that you will have to respect. We wouldn't want to lose a reader… Let's just say we can't afford it yet.

Which Wi-Fi switch for connected shutters to choose?

Now that you know everything, you are probably looking for the best smart switch for your roller shutters, so here are some trusted models that have either been proven successful in our tests or with members of our community. You can take them with your eyes closed!

Did i choose Alexa or did she choose me? Let's say that as a beta tester, it's a bit of both! And I do not regret having met our favorite assistant nor this adventure undertaken with Alexien Modo. Technophile, self-taught and loving popularization, I try to make our common passion easy to access!
